california beauty
made in 2008; 32x40 inches
this is a new twist on an old favorite; arcs, spikes, and other shapes were (digitally) cut from a (digital) stash based on photos of flowers and leaves and combined (digitally) into a beautiful quilt top that was printed on large sheets of paper-backed, treated cotton. when quilted, he results look much like a traditional new york beauty, but without laboriously paper piecing the spikes and sewing together curved edges! see "piecing with pixels" for instructions about how to create similar blocks. the patterns and digital stash to make this quilt may be purchased and downloaded from the shop.

canada by rail
made in 2009; 29x40 inches
a heap of photos taken during a wonderful trip across canada begged for a special quilt to display them. i selected 24 representative pictures and started playing around with photoshop elements filters (to create the increasingly abstract"mats" behind each picture) and the quarter circle cookie cutters to cut the shapes from the filtered versions of each photo. i arranged the pictures and then created the fabric for the border by repeatedly applying the"motion blur" filter to copies of the blocks around the edges of the quilt and adding a little digital brush work. i printed the top on paper-backed, treated fabric, added the border and quilted the top with interlocking concentric circles.

trip to mt shasta
made in 2008; 24x36 inches
this drunkards path-type quilt is based on photos taken by my 6-year-old grandson caleb during a trip to northern california to visit his physical therapist. i explained that he should look for great colors and textures and unusual subjects for the images that we would use as backgrounds. his creative choices included close-ups of peanuts, hot-tub water, rocks, leaves, berries, bark and a pine cone. he and i (digitally) cut quarter circles from some of the photos and applied elements filters to the rest to create the bright fabrics. i stacked and rotated the results to create a pleasing composition, and printed the top on paper-backed, treated cotton.

seacolor quilt and variations
made in 2007; 24x25 inches
when invited to teach a 5-day empty spools seminar at asilomar, i asked gudny campbell to join me. we had 3 days to create a quilt to illustrate our class (technology. a quilter's best friend) for the brochure. we had just met, it was our first collaboration, she used a pc and i used a mac, and we had to work separately, communicating by phone and email. a daunting challenge! i created five vertical strips. blending images of asilomar that i had photographed over the years. gudny selected three, positioned them on her enlarged photo of the coast, and added additional images on top. since we created the original quilt, both gudny and i have used elements of it to make different versions. one of mine is shown here. the other, using the two collages that were not included in seacolor, became asilomar evenings.

arkansas ancestor's anguish
made in 2007; 14 x 14 inches
the off-kilter quilters 2007 challenge was to illustrate three words (each starting with the same letter of the alphabet drawn from a hat) using only two colors (also drawn from a hat). i drew the letter a and the colors charcoal and rust. i had just returned from a trip to arkansas where i found the grave of my great great great grandparents. in researching them, i found that they had lost two sons, two daughters, and two sons-in-law to the horror of the civil war (they supported the union but lived in a confederate state). i created my challenge quilt digitally using 2-inch squares as a base that were cut from photos of their headstone and the red arkansas clay soil. on these, i superimposed a sketch of the grim reaper and my photo of a canon on the site of the battlefield where two of their sons were killed. as you can imagine, my entry had a very different mood than the rest, which were playful and light-hearted.
